Clinical Evaluation of Treatment with Single Dose Fluconazole(Diflucan) in Patient with Vaginal Candidiasis




Abstract
A clinical evaluation about effectiveness of single dose fluconazole (Diflucan) therapy in vaginal candidiasis has been carried out in 43 patients who visited Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Severance Hospital Yonsei University from March 1st 1990 to January 31st 1991.
The majority of patients (72.1%) were between 20 and 39 in age. and the mean age was 34.8years(range 23 to 61 years). The most offending organism was Candida albicans(95.3%) At the end of therapy, symptoms such as pruritis, buring sensation, and vaginal discharge were eliminated in 92.3%, 90.0%, and 90.0% of patients, respectively, Elimination of signs such as vulvar and vaginal erythema, vaginal discharge, cervical erosion, and villvovaginal excoriation were noted in 91.4%, 87.8%, 86.1% and 80.0% of patients, respectively. Cure rates which were evaluated by organism on culture and clinical symptoms and signs after treatment were 86.9% at 5?9 days follow up, and 91.2% at 4?6 weeks follow up. There were no undesirable side effects of the drug or laboratory abnormalities after treatment.
So, fluconazole, may become the orally active antifungal agent capable of treating vaginal candidiasis with single dose therapy.
